The very first thing that you should do after buying your brand new game camera is add it to your household record of valuables. For many people this is going to be the most expensive item that they have every decided to leave in the woods for weeks on end. Don't get to excited about the purchase and run off to the deer lease to hang the game camera. You should document the exact make and model of the camera and the serial number of the unit. All of this information is located on the inside of most game cameras. If possible you could even make a label with your contact information and place it inside the camera.
Another tactic that has been tried is to label the outside of the camera with a sticker that could imply that the camera is the property of a state wildlife commission or other government branch. This little scare tactic may not work, but it never hurts to try. I would also suggest that you check with your insurance agent to find out if there is anyway to apply coverage to a scouting camera. You may be surprised to find out that they will insure your cameras for a couple of dollars a year. We mark all camera's with a permanent marker. We put our name, phone number and camera number on the outside and inside. That helps us know what is out there and we hope discourages theft. No.2 Marking camera.....
I'm using a small engraver to put the serial # on the back of the camera and the housing along with my name/phone. This is because the serial number is only on a label inside the battery compartment and easily removed. |
